When you are venturing out into the world as a writer/author or actor/actress the question is how do I get myself noticed? Of course I wouldn't suggest standing on a high bridge or an over pass looking like you're going to jump to get attention.
Then there are the Literary agent for writers, Agents for actor/actress. Now, would it be more professional if one had a publicist? I think so, but how do you know if the one you're considering is going to be a good fit for you? How do you know if the person or company you're wanting to work with is going to get you all of what they say they will do? You don't exactly. I would recommend a list of clients names and phone numbers or emails and contact them personally. ASK the right questions. How lo?g did they work for you? How much money did you have to pay out of pocket? Do they still work for you? Would you use them again in the future? What did they do for you in ways of promoting you?
And if all else fails there is always the good 'ole Better Business Bureau (BBB). Don't just rely on one or the other do as much research as you need to be sure of what you want to do. Don't be forced into contracts or payments with out having a lawyer read the FINE PRINT shall we say.
